Reflections on Postcolonial Memory

Guest Lecture by Sakiru Adebayo on December 15

ABSTRACT
In this talk, I will be discussing the nexus between postcolonial studies and memory studies. I will trace the history of memory studies in postcolonial studies as well as the history of postcoloniality in memory studies. I will highlight the ‘emerging proximity’ between the two fields and also point out some potential areas of study within the emerging field of postcolonial memory studies. I will later turn to the works of Michael Rothberg to examine how he incorporates the history and memory of colonialism in his works. I will focus on his article “Cultural Memory, Colonial Legacies and Postcolonial Studies” as well as his book, Multidirectional Memory: Remembering the Holocaust in the Age of Decolonization, in order to further establish the overlapping concerns in memory studies and postcolonial studies.
