Spaces-in-between: Transculturalism in East-Asian-Canadian Literature and Society
(Supervisor: Ralf Hertel, Trier)
In times of globalization and locomotion (migration), the conceptual description of sociocultural encounters is considered more and more important. Terms such as "multi-" or "interculturalism" became a part of everyday life and due to its ascribed position as a role model, Canada attracts special attention because of multiculturalism's political implementation. Does this concept, however, correspond to social reality? Or is the present rather to be characterized as "transcultural"?
Within the scope of my PhD-project “Spaces-in-between: Transculturalism in East-Asian-Canadian Literature and Society” (working title), I hence examine, if (and if so, how) transculturalism as a concept of sociocultural encounter is negotiated in Canada's literary and societal discourse.
